Eplan offers an AI solution for electrical design

Eplan Copilot is Eplan’s first AI solution. It is integrated into the Eplan Platform and acts as a connecting element between the individual systems.

It enables users to formulate tasks in natural language and thus operate the software intuitively. This means you no longer need to be familiar with every function – the AI simply makes them accessible.

“We want to give users the best possible support in using and mastering our software for their tasks,” says Sebastian Seitz, CEO at Eplan.

Based on a described task, Eplan Copilot generates:
  • Context-sensitive answers
  • Clear recommendations for action
  • Step-by-step instructions
  • And – in the future – automated actions

An integrated approach rather than AI hype

To use AI effectively and at scale, connections must be established. Rather than relying on isolated solutions and piecemeal AI, we therefore take an integrated approach:

  • AI as a new interface layer between the user and the engineering platform
  • AI as a co-thinking partner, not as a decision-maker
  • AI based on a consistent data foundation
  • AI as part of a long-term platform concept

In short: Eplan Copilot is your co-thinking partner, connecting engineering knowledge, software functionality and real-world tasks via a new interface layer – reliably, scalably and with a future-proof approach.

Looking ahead, Eplan Copilot will become the orchestration layer of the Eplan Platform: it connects systems, initiates processes and supports decision-making across entire engineering chains.

Dr Thiemo Gruber, Senior Vice President Solutions & Development at Eplan:

“Eplan Copilot and the associated AI agents will form a single, comprehensive toolbox. The AI agents will relieve engineering users of one routine after another. Copy-and-paste will become redundant, because the computer and our algorithms are better and faster at it. The revolution will be that the designer can focus almost exclusively on creative work. More new products, more innovation with less time-consuming ancillary tasks in a much shorter time.”

Stories with our partners

Working together towards “Connected Industry”

A use case developed using the Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service demonstrates how artificial intelligence can support engineering in the future. It shows how an assembly panel layout can eventually be generated fully automatically by AI.

This includes selecting the appropriate enclosure or mounting plate, as well as cable ducts, DIN rails and components. At the touch of a button, the AI generates the appropriate layout, and the user immediately knows which enclosure is suitable for which project.

Our experts see potential time savings of up to 40 per cent here. This is a potential area of application that is currently still in the conceptual phase – a conceivable direction, but one that does not necessarily lead to product maturity.

Copilot end-to-end integration with Siemens

Together with our partner Siemens, we are presenting our latest developments in the use of generative AI-supported copilots in engineering. The aim of the collaboration is comprehensive end-to-end integration that will digitise and automate the entire engineering process in future.

The Siemens Engineering Copilot already enables the automatic generation of TIA code blocks for programmable logic controllers. In a showcase, we also demonstrate how the Industrial Copilot can independently make changes to an Eplan project – and that is just the beginning.

“In future, industrial copilots will work ever more autonomously and be even more closely networked with other systems,” says Rainer Brehm, COO for the automation business and CTO at Siemens Digital Industries. “This will revolutionise engineering and give companies an enormous competitive advantage.”
