Behind the Series: Race to the Finish Line – The Finale
A Crisis at the Finish Line
The team cleared previous hurdles with suspension and machining, but two failures occurred – a motor controller malfunction and shorted battery modules. These issues threatened to disqualify the team right before the start of the race.
By integrating Eplan Education throughout the build, the team gained technical organization and maintained a digital roadmap of their systems – all of which proved vital during the malfunctions. This allowed the team to troubleshoot complex power distribution and wiring under pressure without relying on guesswork.
The Scrutineering Hurdle
Just two hours before the dynamics testing closed, the student-engineers stabilized the battery and managed limited power to successfully complete a qualifying lap. And with less than an hour to spare, they received the coveted blue sticker, symbolizing they officially passed scrutineering.
The next day, the car took the track. That moment represented the culmination of three years of design and iteration, late nights in the lab, and a new generation of engineers establishing a legacy for themselves.
Final Thoughts
Eplan is proud to support the development of the next generation of engineers. The University of Texas Longhorn Solar team demonstrated that while software provides the framework for precision, resilience carried their project through. The LHR Solar team arrived with a plan and left with proof that their engineering paid off.
