Behind the Series: Race to the Finish Line - Episode 5
Progress at the Scrutineering Stations
The episode opens with a moment of unity, the traditional top-down team photo featuring all competing cars and crews. For the Longhorn Racing Solar team, the mood is optimistic. The team has been moving through static scrutineering with speed and the scoreboard is looking green:
- Lights and vision = passed.
- Mechanical/static = mostly "greens" with a few "yellows" with minor fixes already in the works
- Remaining hurdles = electrical and dynamics.
The Dynamics Dilemma – Searching for Speed
While static checks went smoothly, dynamic testing resulted in the team's first major roadblock. During the figure-eight test, the car failed to reach the required speed.
The team suspects the motor isn't drawing enough power to handle the aggressive maneuvers in a world where every second counts and begins immediate adjustments to the motor settings to prep for a retry.
Mechanical Failures and “Side Quests”
Innovation rarely happens without a breakdown. A mechanical failure in the shock system threatened to stall progress entirely. Fortunately, a partnership saved the day. The partner provided rapid re-machining of a critical component, allowing the team to get back into the fight.
The 3 A.M. Mystery
The episode’s climax centers on a frustrating technical setback. The motor controller appears to be limiting current, preventing the car from hitting full output.
The system was performing perfectly at 3:00 a.m. the previous night. Suspecting a software glitch or an accidental revert to old code, the team made the decision to roll back the software to the early-morning configuration.
The Fight Continues
As the sun sets on Episode 5, the University of Texas at Austin Longhorn Racing Solar team is exhausted but undeterred. With Eplan’s design precision backing their build, they are fighting through fatigue to ensure Daybreak is track ready.
Watch Episode 5 and stay tuned to see if the software reverts and if the mechanical fixes are enough to get the Longhorns across the start line!
