More Than a Car
For the student engineers behind Daybreak, the solar-powered vehicle designed using Eplan Education’s software represents far more than a class project. It marks one of the defining moments of their college careers, a culmination of years spent designing, testing, and pushing themselves beyond the classroom.
As one team member described it, the unveiling wasn’t just a presentation. It was an “investor confidence meeting.”
Even with a last minute scramble to repair a brake light as guests arrived, the unveiling was a triumph. When the cover came off, the crowd’s gasps confirmed what the team already knew: the countless hours refining electrical systems and mechanical efficiencies and every missed hour of sleep had been worth it.
This moment became a major milestone in Race to the Finish Line, Episode 3 of our miniseries following the University of Texas Longhorn Racing Solar Team as they design, build, and race their student-engineered solar car. What we captured was more than an engineering achievement; it was the emotional payoff of years of commitment.
One team member summed it up moments before the unveiling: “This feels like the big finale. Longhorn Racing and the Solar team are what I’ve cared about most since I came to college.”
Building Engineers, Not Just Machines
At Eplan, we often say our tools help build complex systems, but the Longhorn Racing Solar Team captured it best: “We don’t build cars, we build engineers.”
The unveiling brought together supporters, families, and faculty to witness a student project to become a fully operational race car. Daybreak stood as proof of a year spent learning through hands-on engineering, problem solving, and iteration.
As the team prepares for the 2025 Formula Sun Grand Prix, they carry more than a finished vehicle. They bring a year’s worth of hard work, persistence, and technical achievement, ready to be put to the test on the track!
